The heat issue was first set by the FDA as the standard of how many parts per million were deemed unsafe to consume. This means BPA is still present just not in "high" amounts. However it's not just heat that causes BPA leaching. Wear and tear, scratches, even leaving the bottle in the car can leach the chemicals in to the water. Also the chemical is found in canned goods INCLUDING canned formula.

Here's the disconnect: I once mistakingly bought organic yogurt from a company who for some reason used the #6 plastic. I called and they stated that the parts per million were well under that which was deemed unsafe. My response, "Independent (non-FDA) research has showed the chemical BPA is toxic no matter how "much" is leached into the food."

What is the first thing baby bottle companies ask you to do when preparing for use: BOILING! I'm looking forward to the plastic being banned. I was aware of the plastic issue before purchasing baby bottles, so most of the ones I have are fine and are made from polypropylene or polyethylene. Many of the big brand bottle companies continue to produce Polycarbonate baby bottles. Hopefully news of the Canadian ban will send yet ANOTHER clear message that parents, lawmakers and health activists are NOT ok with the profits vs safety.

I love my Sigg bottle.

But it should be known that the BPA is released when the plastic is heated. So don't wash your bottles.
